Despite thousands of hours of video, thousands of hours of eye-witness testimony….
Despite admissions and formal confessions of guilt by participants themselves….
Despite the deaths and subsequent suicides of law-enforcement officials, the destruction and debasing of the building that epitomizes our nation, and the ensuing devastation of the lives of thousands who watched family members stand trial and serve time in support of a liar and fantasist who demanded their fealty and offered nothing in return….
Despite all this and more, we are now being asked to swallow the MAGA line that January 6, 2021, was some glorious revolution full of honor and patriotism. It was not. It was a riot spurred on by a cabal of traitors and effected by a thuggish mob attempting to overthrow the government.
And remember, there are Americans alive today who celebrate the actions of Timothy McVeigh (168 dead, including 19 children in a day-care center). There will always be that seamy side of America filled with grievance and resentment who find in people like McVeigh and Trump something noble and quixotic.
They were merely traitors.
Until a plaque in the Capitol commemorates January 6, 2021, calling it what it was and naming the criminals responsible, it's up to the rest of us to remember and recount the truth. My parents lived through Pearl Harbor—I grew up with the story. That tradition of passing along the facts now rests with the adults in the room. Education, even in schools, will be a continuing and possibly increasing challenge, but January 6, 2021, should never become a topic for debate.
And though it is Christian to forgive, forgive and condone are spelled differently—and for good reason.
